Have Questions? We've Got Answers.

Here are some of the most common questions we hear about eye exams, glasses, and insurance. Don’t see what you’re looking for? Contact us — we’re happy to help.

How often should I get an eye exam?

We recommend having an eye exam every 1 to 2 years, even if your vision feels fine. Regular eye exams are important not just for updating your prescription, but also for monitoring your overall eye health. Many eye conditions, like glaucoma or macular degeneration, can develop without noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

Children should have their first exam at around 6 months, then again before starting school, and regularly after that to ensure healthy development. Adults with no known issues can typically go every 2 years, while those with diabetes, a family history of eye disease, or wearing contacts should come in yearly—or as recommended by their optometrist.

An eye exam is about more than just seeing clearly—it’s a key part of your overall health care.

Do you accept walk-ins?

Yes, Visionmasters does welcome walk‑ins—but booking is encouraged for the smoothest experience. Both the Camrose and Wetaskiwin locations offer appointments for routine exams, contacts fittings, and eyewear selection

Do you offer direct billing to insurance?

Yes — we do offer direct billing to major insurance providers, including (but not limited to) Sun Life, Manulife, Blue Cross, Greenshield, Canada Life, and Desjardins. Kids and seniors can also be covered through Alberta Health Care.

Here’s how it works:

  • We can process your insurance claim in-store, applying benefits directly to your purchase. You just need to bring your insurance information and a matching prescription.

  • If we can’t bill your provider directly, we’ll give you a detailed receipt so you can submit a claim yourself.

Are children’s eye exams covered in Alberta?

Yes, Alberta Health Care covers one full eye exam per year for children and teens under 19. This includes a comprehensive assessment to check vision and eye health. Regular eye exams are important for kids, even if they don’t show signs of vision problems—many issues can go unnoticed and affect learning or development.

Some clinics may charge a small fee if extra testing is needed, but the core exam is covered. If you’re unsure what’s included, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to walk you through it.

What’s included in a routine eye exam?

A routine eye exam checks more than just your vision—it’s a full assessment of your eye health. During your visit, we’ll test your eyesight, update your prescription if needed, and screen for early signs of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration.

The exam typically includes:

  • A review of your medical and vision history

  • Vision testing with and without corrective lenses

  • Eye muscle and movement checks

  • A look at how your pupils and peripheral vision respond

  • A detailed evaluation of your retina, optic nerve, and internal eye health

If you wear contacts or have specific concerns, we can include extra testing tailored to your needs. Our goal is to make sure your eyes are healthy and your vision is crystal clear.

How long does an eye exam take?

A routine eye exam usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. If you’re a new patient, wear contact lenses, or need extra testing, it might take a little longer. We’ll take the time to check your vision, assess your eye health, and answer any questions you have.

We do our best to keep things efficient while making sure you get the thorough care you deserve.

Can I get glasses or contacts the same day?

In most cases, you can order your glasses or contacts the same day as your exam. If we have your prescription and lenses in stock, we may even be able to have them ready the same day.

For custom prescriptions or specialty lenses, it can take a few days to a week. We’ll help you pick the perfect frames or lenses and make sure they’re fitted just right—then let you know exactly when they’ll be ready for pickup.

Do you offer glasses for kids?

Absolutely! We carry a wide range of glasses designed just for kids—durable, comfortable, and fun styles they’ll actually want to wear. Our team is great with little ones and will help find the perfect fit based on their age, face shape, and prescription.

We also offer lenses with scratch-resistant coatings, flexible frames, and options for active kids who need something tough enough to keep up with them. If your child needs glasses, we’ll make the process easy and stress-free for both of you.

Do you repair glasses?

Yes, we do offer glasses repairs! Whether it’s a loose screw, bent frame, missing nose pad, or something else, bring your glasses in and we’ll take a look. Many small fixes can be done on the spot.

If the damage is more serious, we’ll let you know your options and do our best to get them back in working shape quickly. Even if you didn’t get your glasses from us, we’re happy to help.

Can I try contact lenses if I’ve never worn them?

Absolutely! If you’re curious about contacts, we can guide you through the process. During your eye exam, we’ll check if you’re a good candidate and help you choose the right type of lenses based on your eyes and lifestyle.

We’ll show you how to insert, remove, and care for them safely, and you’ll get a trial pair to see how they feel. Our team is here to support you every step of the way—you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Do you treat dry eyes?

Yes, we do! If your eyes often feel dry, itchy, gritty, or watery, you might be dealing with dry eye syndrome. We offer thorough evaluations to find out what’s causing it and create a treatment plan that works for you.

Treatment options may include prescription or over-the-counter eye drops, lifestyle tips, dietary recommendations, or in-office therapies. You don’t have to live with discomfort—book an appointment and we’ll help get your eyes feeling better.
